Judo relies on many techniques that use the gi to set up throws. These are ineffective since most people do not wear a gi in MMA. There is no collar or sleeve to grab on to for throwing. The grips and holds that are used in Judo either do not work, or need to be modified to work for no-gi scenarios. Without the gi, there is also the problem of people getting sweaty and slippery in MMA. Judo throws also have a smaller margin for error.
Wrestling will be better for MMA, since it translates very well to the sport’s rules and it requires less practice to execute a basic wrestling takedown than a basic judo throw. While wrestling does not teach submissions, having the tools to take someone down and keep them there is extremely valuable, and is a good foundation for learning submissions in the future.
wrestling is a HUGE advantage in MMA. look at a lot of top talent fighters, they are the wrestlers. Wrestlers control a large parts of the fight on the ground and direct the fight to where they want to fight it, be that clinch or cage or ground.
Judo is an okay style, GSP has done wonders for it but in all it isn’t all that useful outside the occasional throw which BJJ would cover the basic concepts of anyways.
I’m more of a Judo fan myself. Wrestling is good for control on the ground, but doesn’t teach submissions. Judo is a very well-rounded style and teaches submission as well. I also believe Judo is more effective for street application as well.
