What Is a Mixed Martial Arts Fighter?

Does the term mixed martial artist refer to a person who trains in mma or could it be to someone who mixed arts for example muay thai with BJJ?

An individual who trains in more than one style of fighting. The more popular are kickboxing, muay thai, jujitsu or Brazilian jujitsu. This normally helps the person be a good standing fighter, and gain skills to be effective on the ground as well.

You answered your own question. Training in MMA is training in a variety of martial arts. Most commonly Muay Thai, and BJJ mixed in with some boxing and wrestling. Others used pretty frequently are kempo, sambo, and some judo.

Now with Lyoto Machida dominating in the Light Heavy Weight Division karate is making a comeback.

when I think of Mixed Martial Arts I think of the sport

if you’re trained in various disciplines but you don’t participate in the MMA sport you’re just a martial artist IMO

or if you take boxing or wrestling, you are a boxer or a wrestler or both… hope that makes sense :D

mma is just a term for cross training. mmatists are both the people who actually fight. and those who train in mma. now…to me "mma" does not simply denote every jack*ss who cross trains karate, kung fu, and arnis for example. like the guy a few answers down "mma" is the sport. but if you practice basically the same arts, in the same manner as them…you are a mmatist.

It’s a person who trains and fights in the sport of MMA.

The training can include but is not limited to muay thai and BJJ
