Starting Out MMA Fighting?

I’ve been wrestling for 3 years on my high school team, and I’ve been noticing how legit MMA looks. So I was thinking about trying that out. I know I have to go to a gym somewhere that specializes in MMA stuff, or is good at fighting things. But like what is it like, I can’t imagine it to be very pleasant if you’re losing or whatever. And what kinds of stuff do you need to do for it, both like training, and like equipment and stuff. What’s up with hand wraps, and stuff. Okay, thanks.

Glad to hear your thinking about doing MMA, it’s loads of fun. Anyways…

If your thinking about going to an MMA gym here are a few pieces of advice:
-If your in an area where there are multiple MMA gyms, check them out one by one and maybe train at each on for a week to get a feel for the atmosphere and training there… most gyms love seeing new people that want to learn the sport
-Since you have a wrestling base that’s a good start, but if you want better knowledge of MMA as a whole it’s almost better to join a boxing gym, muay thai gym or bjj dojo first to get more well rounded before making the jump to MMA. (that way you learn to wrap your hands too haha)

MMA gyms can be so many different things. Some gyms there are guys who think they’re tougher than everyone and have to prove it, but other gyms have guys that are humble and respectful… that’s the kind of gym you want to go to, one with the right training partners.

Just be aware, your gonna get your butt kicked… it’s part of the learning experience. Just take it as it is, learn from it and come back the next day better. I remember when I first started my body was so sore from getting beat up all the time, but now my body is used to it and now I can dish out the punishment to new guys like you ;-) haha

You should look into getting your own training equipment just for the sake of cleanliness. I hate putting on gear some sweaty dude just put on, but if you don’t mind then hey, more power to you. Most MMA gyms have the equipment you need anyways.

Good luck if you decide to start MMA, if you like wrestling you’ll love MMA.
