Maximize Your Martial Arts Training Time by Purchasing the Right Gear

Like they say, if you are chopping down a tree, you need to spend some time sharpening the ax – so make sure you have the proper equipment for your UFC training..  Like all sports, proper high-quality equipment is a necessity. Mixed Martial Artists often hurt themselves in the long run by not purchasing the proper equipment from the start..

For example, at my Columbia Martial Arts center, Muay thai fighters often try to spar without headgear. True professionals worry about getting hurt in the ring or cage – not in training..  My Columbia Muay Thai Kickboxing coach always states that if Floyd Mayweather wears headgear when he is sparring, you better be wearing headgear too!

However, the importance of proper martial arts training gear is not just limited to striking styles.  I recently competed in an international Jiu Jitsu tournament and I purchased a new gi to fight in. My first gi was a Fuji gi which I purchased at my Baltimore UFC training school. When you purchase a gi there is a size chart which you should reference. You need to purchase a gi based on both your size and weight – make sure to check the sizing chart as each gi company’s sizes are slightly different.. All you have to do is find where you fall on the chart, then you can easily tell your gi size. You have to take proper care of your gi to assure it will last. For instance, I was able to shrink my uniform by keeping it a little bit longer in the dryer at a higher heat setting.. Unfortunately, the sleeves on my gi shrank too much and is now too short for me to compete in!. I purchased a new gi – this time a Gameness feather..

When you begin your grappling training you will most likely be just fine with only having one gi, but as you train and compete more, it will make your life easier if you look into purchasing at least a second gi. Visits to the laundry room are directly correlated to visits to the martial arts gym so it is worth your while to buy an extra uniform or two..  When I began taking classes I purchased all my equipment so I would be set and ready to start training – you should too, that way you can focus on what you are there for – MARTIAL ARTS – rather than equipment.
