I Need MMA Equipment Help?

I am going to do MMA in the summer, but my mom said I can buy my gloves and other stuff this next week. I went to Wal-Mart the other day and I saw some Everlast MMA gloves, hand wraps, and this heavy bag that stands on the floor. So if I wanted to practice at home on the heavy bag, would these pair of MMA gloves be ok to use?

Would these gloves be ok to use on a heavy bag? Or should I get the ones that cover your fingers? I am planning to do a little bit of grappling and all that stuff. Thanks!

You probably won’t even need mma gloves for a while, I would check with the club to see if you will actually do any mma sparring. Chances are, you will need boxing/ muay thai gloves as they will not let you spar with mma gloves. At my club even if we do spar mma we use muay thai gloves, but we usually keep muay thai and bjj separate. So don’t buy those as they will most likely end up just sitting in you bag.
Some good brands are Twins, Fairtex, Hayabusa, Windy… These are more expensive though.
And ya I’ve heard good things about combatsports, a simple google search will help you find some pretty good deals on equipment.

Personally, I dislike Everlast. I have never had good luck with their stuff. It always breaks down and wears out quickly.
I go to combatsports.com to get anything I need. Their cheap brand MMA gear has worked great for me. I use top contender shin guards and they have held up great. The top contender MMA gloves are not as great, but they hold up.
Wal-mart is not the place to go if you need serious gear. I say this for a few reasons. Mostly the way Wal-mart does business lends itself to cheaper goods. Companies have to make cut backs on products to meet Wal-marts demands. TV power supplies will not last as long, Jeans are made cheaper, lunch meats have water injected into them to take up volume… its just bad news man.
    Good luck on your training.

Everlast has gone downhill. They were the major brand for boxing gloves for many years but now they have lost a lot of credibility due to massive expansion. I have never had good luck with their stuff. It always breaks down and wears out quickly.
Like he said combatsports.com is high quality and low price. It is definetly the way to go. I got almost all my gear from there. I use top contender shin guards and they have held up great. The first gloves i got from Big 5 and they started to fall apart and got really hard from sweating in them and then sitting around.
If you want to get a heavy bag tell your mom it is a waste if you try to go cheap with it. The bags that stand on the floor are really for kids doing karate. If you want to train a little extra at your house then get a hanging bag. If you have room for it they are great. My dad got me one a couple years ago. There is a hanging heavy bag on one side and a speedbag on the other which is really good for your hand speed. You really dont need gloves for the heavy bag i find it better to toughen up your hands. You only get bloody knuckles the first couple times and its not that bad. And make sure you get gloves that are fingerless and dont have a bar on the palm side cause your not allowed to fight with those kinds of gloves. Its best to get open palm gloves so you can do both stand up and grappling without changing your gloves.
