I Just Started Mma Training and Im 27. Is It to Late to Go Pro?
i’ve noticed alot or mostly all the pros have been in some kinda martial arts since they were really young? im just 27 and starting, and it makes me think since i dont have that kind of experience i might not go pro.
If you’ve been doing athletic stuff most of your life then probably not.
If this is the first time you’ve been off your couch in 15 years, i would say it’s probably a bad idea to think about going pro.
Nope, not too late. But, right now you should set short term goals instead of long-term.
Maybe, try to compete in a grappling tournament in a couple months. Or try to land a submission on a good guy in the gym. Keep going to class. Maybe in 2 years or so, if you dedicate yourself you could try an amateur fight.
The idea is you want to go pro. So, the first thing to do is to find an organization that is close to you, and get licensed to fight.
Then start getting some training done.
1. Stand Up, punching, and striking – Boxing, or Muay Thai/ American Kick-Boxing
2. Ground Game- Wrestling, Ju Jitsu, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Judo, Kung Fu
Wrestling- good for take downs, and some submissions, and ground and pound
Ju Jitsu/Brazilian Ju Jitsu – Are the same, or dang near it. Some stand up, some punching and kicking, and ground submissons
Judo, >
Kung Fu> Stand up, punch and kick ,and throws
Sambo> great all technique. but good luck on finding a place to train
And after 3 months of training, get your 1st fight hopefully against another beginner, or a guy with under 3 fights. Get the feel get either your first victory or first loss.
Then get back into the gym and train for another 6 months.
(The idea is not to be great at any 1 martial art, but to know how to practice and defend against 2 of them.)
Frank Mir- Black Belt Ju Jitsu gets knocked out
Shane Carwin- exhausts himself and gets submitted
Chuck Liddel- It doesn’t matter coz the guy drops his left hand and gets KO’d.
BJ Penn, frustrated because of a younger, faster guy who did not want to engage.
Greaser St. Pierre, cheats: uses vaseline, eats salty foods- to make him sweat more,
I am sure uses some sort of HGH, or something like Creitine. And uses his wrestling background for take downs.
Quinton Jackson- Stand up,
etc…
Go for it.
No, however if you do want to go pro dont just train in fighting. Get into traditional martial arts along with your training. (most top contenders in the UFC have Blue/Brown/Black belts in a form of martial arts and then train in MMA to make them better, more rounded fighters.
Try your skills in some grappling events and small shows near you. Do some pancrase, or shooto, or something similar to hone your skills before going all out. You have a limited window though. If you do want to go pro, I wouldn’t spend too much time doing amateur.
not to late at all, but you can’ t just turn pro, you have to have a handful of amateur fights first, then go before a state commission and they determine if you can go pro or not, you can’t lose all your fights and turn pro, they look at your amateur record as a fighter, your skills, and then determine if you should go pro or not.
