How to Prevent Matt Burn on Your Toes?
I’ve been doing mma for a few months now and often the most painful injury I come home with is matt burn on the top of my toes (more painful than black eyes, split lips etc).
Anyone know any piece of equipment that can prevent this?
Tried sticking plasters on them, they just come off. The normal ankle support doesn’t cover the top of the toes.
Any ideas?
Dont be such a Wussy! U can take it!
Nah man your stuck with it. You will get used to it. I have been doing Judo along time and still get a good one somrtimes. It burns a bit for a couple days but ebentually it calases and you do’nt feel it anymore… Once you get it tape it. But go easy on putting tape on the bottom of your feet or toes as you will lose alot of grip. taping toes is ok if they get broken or jammed. But again you lose grip. In Judo if your only working on stand up (throwing) then it isn’t too much of an issue but for Ne-waza. Ground work you need to be ablle to move around and push with your feet.
So not to sound like a dick but ya suick it up. And hey chicks dig stuff like that. It might not look too good but trust me it makes you look tough and they like it.
I normally tape my toes, I buddy tape them to prevent them from getting messed up in any cracks on the mat and it helps keep them from getting mat burned.
I tape my fifth toe and fourth toe together, (thinking 1st toe is the big toe and working downward) and I take my second and third toes together. I usually leave my big toe free. (Rarely get mat burned on it)
Buddy taping the toes gives some added stability, but not to the point that it limits anything, plus it pretty much keeps the tape on. (taping one toe at a time, the tape will most definately come off).
Good tight taping and buddy taping them has worked for me through Judo, wrestling and MMA.
You must be working on some thicker mats or doing a lot of shots to get mat burned there…
Buddy taping my friend, it yeilds good results.
Hope that is of some help
Im assuming you havent been grappling wrong , when i first started BJJ i got mat burn on fingers and toes all the time. You have to learn how to step and move correctly , DONT DRAG YOURSELF ACROSS THE MAT! quit jerking around and being nervous and you wont have to worry about mat burn
JudoMofo’s right you can take your toes. You can also try putting a (very thin) vasaline on them.
Or get some new shin gaurds that cover your toes, too.
They will callus over one day.
As far as preventing them, you basically have two options, tape your toes or wear wrestling shoes.
For those telling you to just suck it up, there is another issue. Staph infections are commonly transmitted from mats to open wounds (like an abrasion from mat burn). If you have an open wound, cover it (one of the above methods) before working out.
Put some Aloe Vera on your toes before you got to bed. After a few weeks the skin will become hard and it won’t hurt anymore. I remember it being a little uncomfortable, but not painful. Do you have diabetes or anything that is preventing healing? This will only last a few weeks. Honestly though, mat burn us very minor compared to what you are eventually going to face. You have to learn to take it. Taping your toes will just delay building up your tolerance. If you want to stay soft for some reason there is probably some sort of toe guard if you look in the ladies martial arts section of the store.
after a while u will develope caluses… every1 of my toes is calused, that is probebly the best route to take if u plan 2 do mma for a long time cuz tape will only protect so much for so long, caluses will protect u in the spots that need protection
Tape! Works wonders until you build up a callus
