How Often Should I Train in Mma?
Ive just started mma and im currently doing one muai thai/kickingboxing class a week and one judo/jiu jitsu class a week. Most of the other days i am working out at the gym. I want to compete amatuer mma, am i training often enough? How often should i train per week?
First of all, MMA requires knowledge in many aspects: Striking, Wrestling, Takedown Defense, Submissions, Submission Escapes etc etc. If you’ve just started you will have to train a lot at your classes just to gain full knowledge and understanding of all these concepts.
Secondly, as a fighter your focus should be on fight training moreso then gym training. If I were you I would spar vigorously and with the best partners you can find. You will benefit not only from the fitness, but also from increased reflexes, timing, and you will get experience.
Go to 2 classes a week for kickboxing and for grappling if you can and train hard. Learn! Make sure your breaking a hard sweat or your wasting your time. Train with heart, fight with heart. Spar a lot, and work a lot on your judo and wrestling, this will work your core strength. In MMA it is proven that fighters with a wrestling background have a distinct advantage.
Hit the gym twice a week on the other days as well but don’t lift too heavy, rather train in circuits. Do 5 different sets one after the other in 5 minutes, as many of each set as you can 1 per minute, with 30 second rest in between. Do this 5 times, going harder and harder each time. This will give you the endurance to last in the ring. Your strength is nothing if your too tired to use it.
Finally, use the last day to rest. Cut down you alcohol intake, don’t smoke, EAT WELL, replenish your body and be disciplined. Make sure you don’t train so hard you wear your body out, but you should always be hurting after a training session.
My suggestion for the week: BOX – JITS – GYM – REST – BOX – JITS – GYM… If you do two in one day always rest the next day. Rest is very important!!!
Good luck bro hope to see you in the ring sometime -_-
Fighters train 5-6 days a week. 1 day won’t get you anywhere.
