Does the Army Have MMA Training?

I know there is basic combatives training during boot camp. I am wondering whether the Army offers training after you are a soldier as additional training. I am enlisting in the Army in about 2 months and I I’d like to train in MMA to just better myself as a soldier and I simply like fighting. So does the Army offer this training, or would I be better off finding a local MMA school around where I’m stationed?

The Army offers Combatives Level 2 at most posts, it’s a two week course, and level 3 and 4 at Benning which are a month each. . Sadly, most Commanders don’t incorporate combatives into their training often enough. So try to go to the courses, but if you’re really into it, you’ll need to go off post. Most posts have yearly combatives tournaments and Some, like Fort bragg, even have standing combatives units, where their only job is learning and teaching combatives. That will only be available to you after you’ve been in for a little bit.

That link will give you everything you need to know about Army Combatives.

It is fun, but like an above poster said, it’s not incorporated into normal training very much. It has a high risk of injury and just isn’t that important in modern warfare.

Honestly for the average soldier, Unit Level Combatives Training is mainly used for a moral booster, more than anything else. The only time I’ve seen it used in useful training, is when I was in a medic unit and we learned how to subdue unruly patients.

Since OIF/OEF kicked off there has been over 1000 documented instances where combatives was used in combat.
It instills the warrior ethos into Soldiers, teaches them to close the distance, gain the dominant position and finish the fight. The goal is not to turn Soldiers into UFC champions but to dominate the fight long enough for their buddy to show up with a gun.

When i did level one, it was a 40 hr smoke fest with 4 clinch drills at the end. You came back to your unit with a limited profile and a set of bloody Acu’s. They always improve things to make it safer.

Most units require level 1 combatives, and a lot of posts offer up to level 2, and some will offer to provide level 3 or fly people to Fort benning for level 3 training.

Best bet is to attend level one, make buddies with the instructor and join a club on post.
