Do You Get Hurt Training in MMA?

I’m not looking to become a proffesional fighter. I just want to learn how to fight and defend myself. So do you get hurt in the training part of MMA?
I dont mind a black eye or being bruised up. I’m talking about broken bones or torn ACL or something that is going to prevent me from working. I’m a stocker.

No more than any other athletic endevour, and to some point even less so.

You do any "sport" you are going to risk injury. I would say however you would be more likely to suffer an "injury" (as in something torn or broken) in basketball, flag football, softball, and obviously rugby.

Anything that involves you running, jumping, risks high speed collisions with other people or quick stresses on small joints runs the risk breaking something or tearing something.

For the most part, MMA training is going to be less likely to suffer those sort of injuries. You just don’t have the gravitational and intertial forces at work that you have with a sport in which you have to run, change directions quickly, or jump a lot.

Read the news and see how many pro athletes and fighters end up getting hurt from pick up games of basketball or things of that nature. Look at how many football players get injured during practice even when there is no hitting going on.

In MMA you aren’t running full speed, then putting the breaks on, or doing a cut that forces a lot of stress to your knees or ankles.

The chance is there just like any other sport, but itis much less so then many of the sports in which running, contact while running, or jumping and contact while jumping occurs.

Chances are you train for a good amount of time, you are going to injure yourself somehow, whether it be something minor like a broken hand, or broken fingers, or just some sprains, to full on tears.

In all honesty your job as a stocker has a higher risk level for injury then MMA, especially to your back and shoulders.

But that is my two cents.

It is perfectly normal for someone to train without ever fighting professionally. The vast majority, like myself, just train.

If you go to a legit school, you will need quite a bit of experience before you take part in live stand-up sparring. You will roll/grapple at a hard pace pretty early on in training. I am sore after every practice, and have gotten a couple bumps and bruises. Just make sure to tap to submissions.

Could you break a bone or tear an ACL? Yes, it is a risk, but isn’t likely to happen as a beginner.

Sure, listen to "hoodlum" since he is such an expert and has such extensive training…

Yes, you will get injured during training in anything that involves pugilism.

You can try avoid injury but it’s always going to jump up and bite you in the a s s.

It just comes with the territory.

Well u will get bruised up i can guarantee you that …………ive only been training for a month and already i got 3 legs to the head during jiu jitsu sparring and a couple of punches to the head during boxing sparring and i also gave this guy a black eye with my elbow acctidentlly during jiu jitsu and some guy punched this other guy in the face with no glove(he wanted to see if he could punch him from that position and his hand flew away lol) and this was all in 1 month (3 times a week)…….there is not much of a chance of broken bones rly………..u can get broken joints if u dont tap out quick enough or if the guy does a heel hook too fast……u can get broken ribs and stuff if the guy ur sparring gets too rough………broken nose prob……………but remember all these risks are NOT LIKELY…………….it could happen but i wouldnt count on it………….
